She builds worlds that test emotional truth. She blurs the line between performance and experience. And her characters become a means of discovery.
In her 2023 feature Finding Dad, Phelan turns her search for the father she never met into a powerful study of personal identity, casting an actor to play her while she appears onscreen as the actor experiencing the journey. This creative device allows her to revisit the experience from both inside and outside the frame. She recreates her father’s apartment inside her own home, filling the space with fragments of a life she never got to know. The camera places the audience directly inside these moments with a reactive, unguarded intimacy, while animation reveals the memories and unanswered questions lingering beneath the surface of her story.
Phelan’s upcoming feature Something Happened – where a young woman failed by the system forms a vigilante group to reclaim power on her own terms – brings her deeply personal style to a larger cinematic scale. The restrictions imposed on women were her thematic foundation from the earliest stages of conception. While writing the script, Phelan developed the lead character’s ‘superhero’ costume, using its physical limitations to shape movement and tone, while also beginning to explore the film’s sonic identity. She collaborated with composers to build a sound rooted in the repetitive percussion of eastern worship, channeling urgency and rawness into the characters’ actions.
All of Phelan’s work shares the same immersive emotional approach at its core – where performance, environment, sound, and visual language all work in concert to uncover something truthful beneath the surface.
